Project “Grease-ycle” is a joint collaboration by Yishun Primary School between NorthWest CDC and Raffles Girls School.
The teachers of Yishun Primary School were taught a technique of turning used cooking oil into soap used for household cleaning purposes by some students from Raffles Girls’ Secondary School. As a result, some teachers work together as a committee to facilitate a service learning project that sees the collection of used cooking oil from the neighbouring households and churning out aesthetically-molded pieces of soap from this oil. The entire level of Primary 4 pupils is engaged in this project. |
 |
Pupils ventured into Nee Soon East Zone 1 and went about interviewing the residents on the methods they used to dispose off used cooking oil and also to garner their interest in participating in a recycling drive to store and turn this oil into soap. After two Saturdays of knocking on doors and applying communicative skills learnt through their teachers, they managed to gather about 150 odd interested households. The next step was to start the collection. |
 |
On the first collection, we were blessed with about 20 litres of cooking oil which could in turn be converted to slightly more than 200 pieces of soap. The collection will continue till early September on a fortnightly basis while pupils are encouraged to donate their used cooking oil to the school on the Mondays following the collections. |
Pupils will be taught on the technique of soap-making after their mid-semestral examinations. Excitement is prevailing in the pupils as they eagerly anticipate the commencement of this workshop.
Proceeds from the sales of the soap will go into the school’s Needy Pupils’ Funds and North West Community Development Council Food Aid programme. In the pipeline, there will also be a workshop to teach residents how to make the soap by these Primary 4 pupils.
